Teen Dance Classes in Oxnard: Raices

Raices means roots. This is our folklorico class built for middle and high school students starting from zero, because it is never too late to learn the dances of your culture. No experience, no judgment, just real technique taught bilingually by Ms. Itzel at our South Oxnard studio. Now enrolling for Winter 2026.

A Beginner Class That Respects Teens

Most dance programs ask teens to squeeze into classes full of little kids or keep up with dancers who started at 5. Raices does neither. It is a basic skills breakdown designed for first-time dancers in middle school and high school: the fundamental steps, the zapateado, the posture, and the partner work of Ballet Folklorico, taught at a pace that takes teenagers seriously.

The class meets you where you are and builds from there, whether that is a student who has never danced a step or a hip-hop or ballet dancer curious about folklorico for the first time.

Reconnecting with Roots

Many Raices students join because their families want them to know the culture behind their name: the music of Jalisco, Sinaloa, and Veracruz, the trajes, the traditions their grandparents danced to. Others join for the workout, the friends, or the stage. Whatever brings a teen through the door, folklorico has a way of becoming theirs.

Classes are fully bilingual, and the group culture is welcoming by design: everyone in Raices remembers what week one felt like.

Common Questions

Is 15 or 16 too late to start folklorico?

No. Raices exists precisely for this. Plenty of accomplished folklorico dancers started as teenagers, and the fundamentals come faster at this age than parents expect.

Can my teen join with a friend?

Yes, and we encourage it. Starting something new is easier with a friend, and folklorico is a group tradition at heart.

Will they get to perform?

As skills grow, Raices dancers join studio showcases and community performances alongside our other groups. Nothing is forced early; dancers perform when they are ready to enjoy it.

How do we sign up?
