Folklorico Classes for Kids Ages 6-8: Botones de Flor

Botones de Flor means flower buds, and this is the class where young dancers begin to bloom. Kids ages 6 to 8 move past the basics into real regional dances from Jalisco and Veracruz, first choreography, and true folklorico skirt technique. Bilingual instruction by Ms. Itzel in South Oxnard. Now enrolling for Winter 2026.

What Dancers Learn at This Level

This is the age where folklorico starts to look like folklorico. Dancers learn beginner repertoire from Jalisco and Veracruz, two of Mexico's most beloved regional styles, and begin rehearsing short pieces for studio showcases. Classes build skirt technique, footwork drills, and the ability to remember and perform a full sequence with the group.

Alongside the steps, Ms. Itzel teaches the tradition itself: where each dance comes from, what the music means, and why folklorico is danced with pride. Children leave knowing they are part of something older and bigger than a dance class.

Footwork, Falda, and First Performances

Six to eight year olds are ready for the two skills that define folklorico: zapateado, the percussive footwork that turns dancers into rhythm makers, and falda work, the sweeping skirt movement that fills a stage with color. Both are taught step by step, with drills that feel like games and progress children can feel week to week.

When showcase time comes, this group performs its own short pieces. For most families it is the first time seeing their child on a stage, and it is a moment worth every rehearsal.

Common Questions from Parents

My child has never danced. Can they start at 7?

Yes. Botones de Flor assumes no prior experience. Brand-new dancers and Semillas graduates learn side by side, and the fundamentals are rebuilt at this level with older-kid speed.

Do boys dance folklorico?

Absolutely. Folklorico has always belonged to boys and girls alike, and the zapateado footwork at this level is a favorite with our young men. All classes welcome every dancer.

What should my child wear?

Comfortable clothes and soft-soled shoes to start. As dancers progress, Ms. Itzel will recommend a practice skirt and folklorico shoes and tell you exactly what to look for before you buy anything.

What comes after this class?

Dancers move up to Elementary, our folklorico class for ages 9 to 11, where technique deepens and performance preparation begins in earnest.
