Dance Classes for Tweens in Oxnard: Elementary Folklorico

Ages 9 to 11 are the golden years for folklorico. Dancers are strong enough for real technique, old enough to own a stage, and young enough to fall in love with it for life. Elementary is our intermediate class for tweens in Oxnard: refined footwork, regional styles from across Mexico, and genuine performance preparation. Now enrolling for Winter 2026.

Technique That Starts to Shine

Elementary dancers refine the skills introduced in Botones de Flor and add the layers that make folklorico thrilling to watch: faster zapateado, controlled turns, expressive falda work, and choreography retention across full pieces. The repertoire widens beyond Jalisco and Veracruz into regional styles from across Mexico, each with its own rhythm, costume tradition, and story.

Ms. Itzel teaches bilingually and holds this group to a loving but real standard: posture matters, counts matter, and every dancer is expected to grow. Tweens rise to it.

Performance Preparation and Cultural Pride

Dancers in this group often join recital pieces and community performances, dancing for real audiences here in Oxnard. Preparing a piece from first count to final bow teaches commitment, teamwork, and the quiet confidence that comes from doing something difficult well.

For many families in our community, this is also the age where cultural identity clicks. Dancing the music their grandparents grew up with gives tweens a pride that follows them far beyond the studio. Commitment to the year-long curriculum is encouraged at this level.

Common Questions from Parents

Can a 10 year old with no dance experience join?

Yes. New dancers join Elementary every season. The fundamentals are folded into every class, so a motivated beginner catches up quickly. If your dancer is 11 or older and brand new, Raices may be the friendlier start; Ms. Itzel can help you choose.

Are performances required?

Performances are a beloved part of this level, and dancers are encouraged to join recital pieces. Talk to Ms. Itzel about your family's schedule; the goal is participation that works for you.
