Preschool Dance Classes in Oxnard: Semillas

Semillas means seeds. This is our foundational folklorico class for 3, 4, and 5 year olds, where Oxnard's youngest dancers plant the first steps of Mexican folk dance. Bilingual instruction by Ms. Itzel, sized for preschool attention spans and preschool-sized joy. Now enrolling for Winter 2026.

What Your Preschooler Learns in Semillas

Semillas is many children's first class without a parent on the dance floor, and everything about it is designed for that milestone. Dancers learn foundational rhythms, basic folklorico steps, age-appropriate posture, and the beginnings of skirt work, the swirling falda movement that makes folklorico unmistakable.

Just as important are the studio skills: listening for the music to start, waiting for a turn, following a sequence of two or three steps, and celebrating classmates. Those habits carry straight into kindergarten classrooms, which is why so many Oxnard parents choose a preschool dance class as their child's first structured activity.

A Class Built for Ages 3 to 5

Three year olds and five year olds are different dancers, and Ms. Itzel teaches to both. Activities come in short, playful bursts: a warm-up circle, a rhythm game, a traveling step across the floor, a simple falda exercise, and a goodbye dance. Music comes from the regional traditions of Jalisco, Sinaloa, and Veracruz, so children grow up hearing the real repertoire from the start.

Every class is bilingual. Instructions come in English and Spanish, so Semillas doubles as gentle language exposure whichever language your family speaks at home.

What to Wear and Bring

Comfortable clothes your child can move freely in and soft-soled shoes are all you need to start. A water bottle helps. Practice skirts and folklorico shoes come later, and Ms. Itzel will guide you on exactly what to get when your dancer is ready, so there is no need to buy anything special up front.

Common Questions from Parents

Is 3 too young for a dance class?

Not for this one. Semillas is built specifically for ages 3 to 5, with short activities, lots of repetition, and zero pressure. If your child is closer to 2, start with Mommy & Me, our parent-child class for ages 1 to 3.

What if my child is shy the first week?

Completely normal. Some dancers watch from the edge for a class or two before joining in, and that counts as participating at this age. Ms. Itzel never forces it; the music usually wins them over.

What comes after Semillas?

Graduates move up to Botones de Flor, our folklorico class for ages 6 to 8, where regional dances and real choreography begin.

When are classes and how do we sign up?
